ME THINKS
"Trees that can stand in the midst of the hurricane often yield to the destroying pests that we can scarcely see with in a microscope. Likewise the greatest foes of humanity today are subtle and sometimes unseen influences at work in society that are undermining the manhood and womanhood of today. The test, after all, of the faithfulness and effectiveness of God's people is an individual one.
What is the individual doing?
-David O. McKay
What are we doing as individuals? I've thought alot about this quote since Sunday it was in our bulletin. Sometimes we are so much like TREES we aren't doing anything major that eats away at us, but the little things that slowly get at our souls and lessons our spirituality and ability to receive.
Little things in society like TV shows sometimes oh there's just a little swearing or a little of this or that. Magazines we look at. Movies we attend. How we see others and treat others. Here a little, there a little {thanks lynn} it all adds up to a whole lot if we are aware of all the subtle things that eventually turn into big things.
The things to our souls as pests are to trees are things like negativity, the blaming, finding fault in others, comparing and competitiveness, assuming things, judging others without asking or knowing among so many other things. Sometimes we don't even know what we are doing and it slowing gets at us makes us more negative and unseeing of what others need, our faith lessens, our feelings become hurt more and the little "pests" become us eats away at us. Unless me make a conscious choice to live how we know we should and put aside all negativity, the test for us is handling what we are given and live each day as we should be - more forgiving, more understanding, more giving in service, more faithful, loving, Christlike people.
I wish it was all that easy but it starts with us
-as individuals-
What are we doing?
{well for starters this individual is doing a lot of thinking and that's where it starts right!}

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
We don't need to wait for someone else to bring us happiness - happiness is a choice we can make at any time we want. You can choose to look on the good side of things and take life more lightly, or you can choose to think gloomy and sad. It's up to you. Life is the movie you see through your own eyes - it's up to you how you take it.

Let there be
more joy and laughter
in your living.

Coming to your blog is like a breath of FRESH air! Love it. I have been so broken hearted lately over some of the STRONG AND TALL TREES within my social and church circle, who have fallen and toppled over. It's been shocking and really hard to take. Their falling away has come as a shock and surprise to everyone. Everyone starts to look at themselves INDIVIDUALLY to see what they need to change before it happens to them (which is a good thing - looking at oneself) but the adversary is SO sneaky!!! IT takes just a little here and a little there....SO subtle that sometimes we don't even see where the "falling" begins.
Anyway....thanks again for an AWESOME post!
Sounds like you had a HUGE weekend! Me thinks you need to take a break and attend the temple this Saturday. LOL! (Inside joke people!)
Hey Chris,
Glad to hear that your painting is finally seeing an end. I can't wait to see your basement finished. I'm so bummed! Our reno's have been set back (of course) at least a few more weeks. Until after Dana's fireplaces are put in--go figure--seriously sad about it! Oh well thats what happens when you are at the mercy of someone else. Eventually we'll get our brand new, nice kitchen and laundry room--just not as soon as we thought.
I stole the pic of us girls (copied and pasted) I didn't get that one on my camera. It is too bad Holli wasn't there :-( I think it's funny how you clarified the can in my hand--I could see why after you said that! Maybe we were the ones needing to re-coup after the weekend family campfire par-tay! JK. It was so a V-8. Too funny! And I think Kinlee was the daffadil thief--terd! It's a constant battle around here -- she thinks they are so beautiful she can't resist! And the burning thing, Kolt was just being his regular tease--I know he didn't intentionally burn Kinlee.
I love all the pictures from the day though. It was so fun to get together then. And we did miss you guys last night too.
Good luck with the carpets tomorrow--hopefully the workers have sobered up by then.
Talk to you soon DJ
I would have gladly taken your place at the lake for four days. All we did was work around our house too, and pack. That's all we ever do. Got done the renos, now we will be building, and then finishing our basement. The end is so not in sight! But you are so right about how good it feels to work together and see what you have accomplished. I love it. Funny, cause if you would have told me 5 years ago I wouldn't mind spending every weekend renovating instead of having some sort of social life I would have laughed at you. Kinda the same idea as why I was so pumped to get a new blender on mothers day instead of clothes or shoes!
So I will be patiently awaiting the arrival of my invitation to the grand opening party for your basement...
You are SOOO RIGHT on!!! I find myself justifying little things all the time. I need to stop! ;) Always a great post, always just what I needed. THANK YOU CHRISTAL!!!
PS Would you e-mail me both of those quotes that you posted please? :) No hurry, just whenever you get a minute.
I needed to read this. I'm struggling with a person in my ward and this is what I need to hear. I LOVE your uplifting blog!!! You are an angel in my life....and good job on the basement!
Great quotes as always! Sometimes it's the little things that start to get us down and we don't even realize it. It's so important to watch out for those things. You'll have to share lots of pics of the finished basement!! That's so exciting :)
haha, i'm laughing at the list of mishaps up there. that's what happens when a bunch of kids are let loose i guess! me thinks you are so right (as usual). we always say it's the little things that we do with ourselves and the kids that matter, and it's true, but it's also true that it's the little things that can bring us down. and the thing is, it's just a little bit of effort in each department (which adds up to a lot of effort) that can help us to keep happy and positive.
I'm so glad the basement reno is nearing an end for you guys! Oh, and that your sister could see her hubby. I hope immigration can work something out soon. Is she living with family while she waits?
